A market cannot stand still, it has to move and it will always move due to actions taken by buyers and sellers. This is especially true with the Crypto market. Even when the official markets (in regular financial markets such as stocks and Forex) are closed traders still engage with trades with over-the-counter (OTC). Most large deals and transactions still take place via OTC which has less regulatory obligations. Even Crypto transactions take place in the OTC market.
When a market moves there is certain price behaviour behind the movement. As traders we have different names for each price behaviour. When the market moves in a continuous direction we call it a trend regardless of whether it is going up or down. When the market does not move with a trend or bias and instead moves in a range we call it a sideways market. Trading a trend is more predictable but the movement depends on the strength of the trend. A sideways market is boring and slow but it is more profitable when it has a breakout from the slower area and that often starts a new trend. These all come together and form the overall market structure. In Cryptocurrency we face trends and sideways markets in a cycle. This is normal, as a trader we have to embrace both market conditions.
Now let us talk about a trend.
Trend:
A market can have a continuous upwards move or a continuous downwards move. When a market consistently moves upside we call it an uptrend and when it keeps moving down we call it a downtrend. There is no good or bad with a trend. Oftentimes amongst retail traders a downtrend is considered as a bad market but the market does not care. Up or down are part of the same market process, you cannot have one type of movement forever. In technical language there is no difference between an uptrend or a downtrend for trades. Both offer equal opportunities. However, you have to wait until a trend shifts to get a new directional bias. In an uptrend you should be looking to buy the dip and in a downtrend you should be looking to sell the local highs.
Let us go into more details with them.
